Nelward Milk Comes From The Trees Ghost Tee shirt
We lived a 3 hour drive from my grandparents so when my dad finished work on Christmas Eve we would pack everything into the Nelward Milk Comes From The Trees Ghost Tee shirt and set off for Yorkshire. No motorways back then. Green fields turned moorland until we finally went over the Pennines, Stanage or Holme Moss, and begun the final leg of our journey through soot blackened mill towns reaching my grandparents’ house at around 8pm. At about 9.30 a plethora of cousins and aunties and uncles would turn up an we would set off to go carol singing with other members of the congregation and band from their local chapel. Along the route we would be greeted with mince pies, slices of Christmas cake and chunks of cheese even the odd glass of Sherry or mulled wine for the adults. We belted out all the old traditional carols, my favourites being While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night which we sung to Cranbrook (Ilkley Moor) and also Christians Awake. We naturally sang O Come All ye Faithful but only after midnight were we allowed to sing the final verse of Yea Lord we Greet Thee. Shortly after midnight we called it a day. Many of the adults slightly ‘merry’ from a surfeit of Sherry!

These nations I put in this category because, historically, they frequently interacted with Czechs, but aside for the Nelward Milk Comes From The Trees Ghost Tee shirt protectorate for the Germans did not rule over Czechs and were a little more distant. Germans from Bavaria or Saxony seem somewhat similar to Czechs, but I do not see much similarity between Germans from Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart and other parts of the country at all. For Poles the region of Silesia, and even the southern Poland around Krakow have a similar feel to Czech Republic, but eastern Poland around Warsaw feels more eastern-European, and western Poland feels more German. Hungary: Hungary is similar to Czechs culturally, but also kind of has its own distinct vibe. I’m not sure why, maybe it’s because of the nation’s unique language and the fact the cuisine is spicier. A little close: Croatians, Western-Ukranians, Romanians from Transylvania These nations and regions share commonality with Czechs because they are part of the Central – European cultural sphere despite being further away. Historically and today, there has been immigration of these people to Czech Republic. During the 16th & 17th centuries many Romanians (Vlachs) immigrated to the mountains in eastern Czechia, and southeastern Czechia had a community of Croatians. Today many Ukrainians immigrate to Czechia. Today thousands of Czechs go to Croatia in the summer, so it is not too exotic.
